Sometime it happens that there is the problem in your PC if you click on Renew your IP address whenever there is no availability of internet. If you get an error with text showing “An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection : An operation was attempted on something that is not a socket.” Then it’s the problem with WinSock configuration on your PC. To solve the WinSock configuration problem you can use Winsock Fix free application to fix your Internet connectivity problems.
However the Renew IP address problems are not always the problem with Winsock configuration and so you need to check out with each steps possible by you and find out the real problem. If you get limited or no connectivity error then it’s the problem with IP address as you have static IP address. Most of the ISP goes with static IP address and for dynamic you need to pay to them.
If you have a DHCP server in your network then you can set your PC Internet Protocol setting to obtain IP address automatically, i.e., it will automatically choose the available IP address. Here is the procedure on how you set your LAN connection to get IP address automatically –
- Right click on Local Area Connection and select properties.
- If you are using Windows 7 then click on Internet Protocol Versions 4 (TCP/IPv4) and in Windows XP click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
- Now make sure that you have selected both Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server addresses automatically are selected.
The above step should work for you and if it doesn’t work then renew your IP address. Still it doesn’t work then you should make sure that there is no software on your computer that is blocking all the ports on your PC. You can also check out by disabling any firewall software or any internet antivirus software as they might be blocking you from accessing internet.
Lastly, the problem of not being able to renew your IP address could be of reason that network interface card (NIC) isn’t working or the driver’s issue. The drivers issue can be easily solved by downloading the respective drivers but if NIC card fail then you need to replace it.
You can also test whether there is the problem with the network card or any LAN card in your PC. The simple way is to check out is to connect the LAN wire to different devices like laptop, tablet or modem and see it. If at all connecting to the router and modem gives you problem in assigning IP addresses, it would be easy to reset the router.
